This error 0x80072EE/ means "ERROR INTERNET LOGIN FAILURE". That is, there has been some issue related to Internet authentication.
We can get this error when: Windows Update has an issue related to DNS. Go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right click on our Internet connection, Properties and click twice on TCP/IP protocol, and see what are the DNS assigned (or see whether our PC is configured to get DNS from ISP). We can try another DNS and see if the issued gets solved. On the other hand, we have to see if in the Hosts file (located in XP on X:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc, being “X” is the letter of the drive where XP is installed) there is an static address for Windows Update (there are some Internet utilities such as download managers or popups blockers which do write an static address
for Windows Update on this file). If effectively there is such an address, delete it (or rather, write a “#” symbol at the head of the line).
Advice: to avoid rebooting the system after modifying Hosts file, we can go to Start, Run, and write (without the quotes): “cmd” and then write (also without the quotes): “ipconfig /flushdns”. This will renew the DNS cache.
