This 0x8007F0CC error means: "STATUS KERNEL NONSTD". That is, the file needed to start the Operating System has not been recognized.
Right click on My Computer icon > Properties > Advanced, click on Settings under "Startup and Recovery" and then click on Edit to edit the "boot.ini" file.
Now we have to pay attention to [operating systems] section and specifically to the line on which there is a reference to our XP. A line such as:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition " /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
If there is a boot option after /fastdetect, delete it, save the new "boot.ini" and reboot. Go to Windows Update again.
IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE: it is strongly recommended you backup the "boot.ini" file before doing any changes. If possible, save this backup on a floppy disk.
