This
is a workaround which could be useful for several Windows Update
errors (this is why “general”), and it could be a good start
point.
As Windows Update
downloads and information are stored on the two folders of this
article, if some download gets corrupted, Windows Update will not
work. A good option is to steal to Windows these folders and the
system will create a new ones. To do this, restart in safe mode
(when the BIOS screen turns black hit F8 and choose that option).
Then, go to Start > Run and type in cmd. On the new screen,
type in these lines and hit Enter after each one:
ren
%windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old attrib -h
%windir%\softwaredistribution ren %windir%\softwaredistribution
softwaredistribution.old
Next, restart
Windows in a normal way and go to Windows Update again. If all goes
well, you can delete the old folders renamed that is
softwaredistribution.old and catroot2.old. You may want to download this cmd file to do the tasks of this article in an automtic way.
