Microsoft
Updates
It is the
newest Microsoft service which joins Windows updates and other Microsoft
products (such as Office, for instance). To use it, we should go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
and download ActiveX controls. When done, we obtain a shortcut in the top side
of Start, All programs. 1. Does Windows Update send any kind of information
about my computer?
No. Windows Update does its work (hotfixes,
installs) on the client machine. The privacy is secured.
2. What is the suitable screen resolution for Windows
Update?
Microsoft
recommends 800x600 or higher
3. Windows Update hangs when accessing to the updates
catalogue, what to do?
Wait a
moment for the catalogue or update the ActiveX control. If Internet Explorer
gets hanged, close it and look for plug-ins added and see if some of them are interfering.
Perform a scan for spyware using Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com)
and at last, delete Windows Update ActiveX
on X:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
(“X” is the letter of the drive on which XP is installed). It will be
downloaded again if necessary.
4. Is it mandatory to use Microsoft Update instead of
Windows Update?
Absolutely
not. Microsoft Update is a mature
and smart service, but you cal always go to Windows Update through the
shortcut in Start, All programs.
5. Can advanced and professional users update their
system in a custom way?
Yes. Microsoft
provides two tools designed for advanced users and big networks: MBSA (Microsoft Baseline Security
Analyzer) and WSUS (Windows Software
Update Services). MBSA is a tiny
application that informs us about what updates we can download. And what are
the security holes of our Windows. You may want to download it from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
(only for English, German, Japanese and French languages). A 2.0 version is
expected in July (current is a beta version). WSUS is a useful tool for updating network stations in a quick way.
See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/default.mspx
for further information
6. What is Windows Genuine Advantage Program?
It is an
initiative from Microsoft for “rewarding” to Windows legal users. It consists
of updates, themes, utilities and applications. It is expected this feature
will be mandatory in the future, even when going to Windows Update. See http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx?displaylang=en
for further information.
